Job Title: Right of Way Agent / Land Rights Specialist

Location: Grand Rapids, MI

Position Type: 12+ Months Contract

Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Right of Way Agent to join our team. The ideal candidate will have the ability to effectively negotiate with private landowners and governmental agencies to acquire various land rights needed for the construction, operation, and maintenance of facilities. This role requires strong organizational skills, the ability to work independently under pressure, and a thorough understanding of real estate documentation, title research, and governmental processes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Negotiate with private landowners and governmental agencies to acquire land rights including, but not limited to: fee simple, easements, leases, temporary workspace agreements, licenses, permits, and ordinances.
  • Plan, organize, and manage workloads; adapt to shifting priorities while meeting deadlines with minimal supervision.
  • Conduct due diligence, both internally and externally, to verify the accuracy and completeness of land rights and identify any deficiencies requiring curative action.
  • Serve as a liaison to landowners/tenants regarding ownership, easement rights, damage claims, and access issues.
  • Utilize company policies, procedures, and systems effectively to complete assigned work.
  • Represent the company at public meetings and hearings with governmental agencies including municipalities, zoning boards, townships, drainage boards, and county commissions.
  • Interpret and analyze a variety of documents including survey drawings, engineering plans, construction layouts, plan and profile drawings, and land title abstracts.
  • Perform in-depth land title research as required.
  • Must have, or be able to obtain within two months of hire, a Michigan Notary Public commission .

Qualifications:

  • 2–5 years of experience in the Right of Way / Real Estate industry, with at least 1 year of experience in land rights acquisition .
  • Demonstrated knowledge of settlement instruments and contractual terms related to real estate transactions.
  • Proficiency in interpreting legal descriptions, maps, plats, and survey documentation.
  • Strong understanding of title research, curative measures, and real estate document recording practices.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to build and maintain positive relationships with stakeholders, including property owners, public officials, and internal teams.
  • Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with governmental agencies and local authorities in Michigan.
  • Membership in professional organizations such as the International Right of Way Association (IRWA) is a plus.
